Governance

Roles & Responsibilities of the Governing Body

The Governors have a statutory responsibility for the school, its finances, the curriculum, policies, staffing and health and safety. Our Board consists of Governors, made up of parents, community members, local authority representatives and staff.

In all types of schools, governing boards have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

  2. Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, whilst ensuring the curriculum is well taught; and

  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school, ensuring budgets are effectively and efficiently spent.

To ensure that resources are used effectively and that every child receives the best education possible, governing boards play a critical role in improving student and school performance. They also decide on issues like performance goals, academic rules, and the school's development plan. They are in charge of monitoring how the school's budget is spent and are accountable for getting the most out of it. Governors also keep an eye on how well those policies and targets are carried out, and they assist, encourage, and challenge the head teacher and staff accordingly.

They achieve this by making two visits per term to the school, learning about its advantages and disadvantages, and posing pertinent questions that foster a culture of constant improvement.

To further understand the role of a governing board see the Governance Handbook provided by the Department for Education

Parents should raise any suggestions or concerns initially with the class teacher and then with the Head teacher. If parents feel that any issue remains unresolved, the issue could then be discussed further with a governor. Where necessary there is a complaints policy with a clear procedure. Governors are always happy to receive feedback from parents.
